Novel: Magician Spy
Magician Spy, a 94,000 page fantasy-thriller novel currently out for agent query.
From my query letter:
Panix Gavid has a problem. He’s a magician who’s just too talented for his own good. His talent gets him beaten up by jealous peers in magician’s school. When the owner of a metalworks, located in Pent, a distant country, offers him a job, he grabs it, taking along his new wife. Even his wife gets tired of his dedication and his talent and she falls into the arms of a traitorous government minister. The owner eventually fires him as he becomes uneasy with Panix’s unique talents.
Suddenly with time on his hands, Panix is recruited by an old friend into his home country’s intelligence service. The opposition, a magic-deprived country, desperately desires a monopoly on the world’s emerging steam technology and sends their top assassin to put into motion plans to seize Pent, the world’s primary source of raw materials. The assassin’s effort expands into a full-scale invasion.
Panix’s first assignment puts him on a collision course with a headstrong young woman, the metalworks owner’s daughter. Through his assignments fighting the opposition, he learns he must use his talent to innovate in order to survive and slow invasion and sabotage efforts. He struggles on the job while he learns to manage a team of extraordinary people and to manage his relationship with the headstrong young woman as he fights his own demons. It’s a tougher task than magic ever was.
Panix lives in a world where magic, which came into the world three hundred years previous, has been used in the place of technology. It has stifled a certain amount of progress. Other than himself, the primary antagonist is Sovad Mustak who is an assassin (spy) for Murgontia, a country that magic passed by. It is an autocratic country that has seized upon technology as a way to attempt to dominate the world. However, they don’t have an abundance of raw materials and seek to take over their neighbor to the north which does. This is the environment where Panix must develop skills that take him outside of himself. He initiates a team of experts to introduce a new kind of spying and investigation for his home country of Korvanna. As he does so, he learns shocking secrets about his father’s decade-old assassination and about his step-mother and step-brother.
